x-o.global is a sound art project that uses smartphones and GPS as tools for cultural production, spatial storytelling, and collective listening. Designed to respond to the realities of migration across different critical sites along the Mexico-US border, the project creates interactive sound maps that can be activated through bodily movement.

Through geolocative technology, x-o.global inserts invisible layers of sound into shelters, refuges, and other spaces that support migrant communities. These sound maps are not visible to the eye, but they become accessible through the GPS systems of smartphones, allowing participants to move through space while activating sonic experiences embedded in their surroundings.

The project proposes listening as a form of accompaniment. Its sound interventions seek to create moments of reflection through sonic materials connected to memory, identity, and place, including the songs of birds associated with Latin American landscapes. In doing so, x-o.global invites participants to perceive their environment differently and to imagine other emotional, cultural, and spatial possibilities.

As part of the workshop series conducted by artist and researcher Jerónimo Reyes-Retana at MOLAA, one of x-o.global’s interactive sound maps was installed near the museum’s facilities, offering participants a free and accessible experience in which sound, movement, and technology come together as tools for sensing and imagining otherwise.

How to access:
To experience this sound piece, scan the QR code with the device’s camera, then go to the designated zone with the provided tablet and a pair of earbuds. After granting access to your location, you will see a value on the screen indicating the distance between your current location and the sound map. This number will change as you move closer. Once you enter the sound map, the label not active will change to active, indicating that the sounds will begin playing through your earbuds.

Step 01:
Walk to the designated section of MOLAA and enter the area within the circles.

Step 02:
Click the “Start” button and allow access to your location.

Step 03:
Put on a pair of earbuds and move through the space as shown in the following video:
